PURCHASE PERMITS · A STARTING GUIDE

Planning a firearm purchase

Understand the current training requirement and the coming permit system.

Information checked September 17, 2026 · WA Gun Training editorial

Start with the date

WSP says the new permit-to-purchase requirement begins May 1, 2027. It is preparing application and training-certification systems ahead of that date. Official WSP overview.

What is the new permit?

RCW 9.41.121 establishes the permit framework, including an application to WSP, fingerprints, and qualifying training or an exemption. The statute describes a five-year permit term. Consult the operative text for the full conditions rather than relying on a summary of your individual situation. Read RCW 9.41.121.

Training is not entirely new

The existing purchase process already includes safety-training requirements. The upcoming framework changes how training fits into a permit application. The statute has separate current and future versions, so check the effective-date heading when reading it. Read both versions of RCW 9.41.1132.

Choose a course for the right purpose

WSP’s July update describes distinct training categories. A course intended for one purpose is not automatically interchangeable with every other course. Verify the specific program and its intended use before booking. WSP training update.
