Washington already has firearm-purchase training requirements. A new permit-to-purchase framework is scheduled for May 1, 2027. Keep those timelines separate when choosing a course.
In effect now
Under the current version of RCW 9.41.1132, a firearm purchaser generally provides proof of qualifying safety training completed within the past five years, unless an exemption applies. Read the version marked “Effective until May 1, 2027” on the official statute page.
Scheduled for May 1, 2027
WSP identifies this date for the new permit-to-purchase requirement. The agency is also developing training certification and application systems. Its stated goal is to make relevant interfaces available earlier in 2027. A target is not the same as a confirmed opening date. See WSP’s implementation information.

Before paying for a course
Ask the provider which requirement the specific course addresses, whether its certification can be verified, and whether completion before implementation will count for your intended application. Do not assume a general safety class or a currently accepted course automatically qualifies under the new framework.
